Autism and Paediatric Dentistry

Treating children with special needs is something many dental students have had very little exposure to and therefore may seem a little daunting. In the community dental services we often receive referrals from general dental practitioners to manage autistic children. However as autism exists on a spectrum many of these children may be treated in primary care. We hope this blog post will help you feel more confident in assessing autistic children, understanding the challenges they face, how we can prepare for their visit, when to refer and behavioural management techniques you may need to discuss with mum and dad should they require treatment.
